I am not here to tell you how to run your church. I’m not even here to tell you how to run your Mother’s Day services (especially now with live-streaming). However, I would like to make a plea to you today.
For the past few years of I have seen some social media debate to NOT celebrate Mother’s Day. There are many reasons for this. There are women (and men) who are hurt and broken. This could be due to the loss of a mother, infertility, mother wounds, or maybe growing up without a mother.
I get this. People in our congregations are suffering.
But this is my plea to you today: please celebrate Mother’s Day at your church. I don’t care how you do it, but please- honor the mothers in your lives and the ones represented.
We live in a culture that is trying to push us to be gender neutral and erase gender all together. But when you look at Adam and Eve you see a portion of God’s image in Adam that you do not see in Eve. And in Eve you see a portion of God’s image not found in Adam.
Both men and women are created uniquely, and we need to celebrate that uniqueness. We have an enemy that’s trying to completely erase our gender because it glorifies God. Our gender uniqueness
It is our job as the Church to stand up and celebrate God’s creations!
“But Rachael, how do I help those suffering on Mother’s Day?”
Good question.
First: Acknowledge the pain in the room and communicate hope
Rejoice and be glad in the day He has made! Jesus is here and He alone brings restoration. He is the healer of broken hearts and is the provider of babies to a barren womb. Show those who are hurting how He does so!
Second: Celebrate all women
A few years ago I had the privilege to preach on Mother’s Day. Before service I met a 22 year old women visiting our church. As we closed our conversation I said, “Happy Mother’s Day.”
She said, “Oh, I’m not a mother.”
I explained that she was indeed a mother. All of us women are called to be mothers in some way, shape or form. Whether it’s biologically, through adoption, or spiritually. We are called to be a mother voice to someone.
Third: We cannot stop celebration because of the unknown
Do we stop going to weddings because of the high divorce rate? Do we stop going to weddings due to the death of a spouse? No! We go and celebrate the start of a new family!
Nor should we stop celebrating parenthood because some women have taken their portion of God’s image and misused it. The women in your church are unique, beautiful, loved, and highly favored. They deserve to learn of God’s grace, healing, and provision.
When Adam was created God called it good. But it wasn’t until Eve entered the scene that it was very good. Not because she was better than Adam, but because the image of God was complete. Let’s show our churches what that looks like!
Why else do you think we should celebrate Mother’s Day? Let me know in the comments below!
